Mentoplasty (chin surgery)
1) Where are the scars located?
If silicon prostheses are chosen, the incision may be internal (in the mouth) or a small cut in the lower part of the chin. The choice will be made by each plastic surgeon. If the choice is a fat graft (in limited cases), there will be no scar.
2) What is the type of anesthesia?
If only the chin is corrected, local anesthesia may be used (with or without sedation depending on the case). If other surgical procedures are performed concomitantly, the surgeon should consider the convenience of operating under general anesthesia.
3) How does the silicon prosthesis look like?
Usually, the surgeon casts the piece or uses pre-molded pieces (various sizes available), which may be exhibited to the patient during the preoperative visits.
4) Is silicon harmful? Can it cause cancer?
Solid silicon has been used worldwide for more than 35 years, in millions of patients, without evidence of cancerigenic activity. This is an inert substance that does not react with the body, remaining in the site where it has been introduced, inside a fibrous capsule that the body itself develops, since the very first days.
· In rare cases the prosthesis has been eliminated. When this happens (usually due to immediate postoperative complications, such as infection, trauma on the area, hemorrhage, etc.), the prosthesis is removed through a simple surgical procedure, under local anesthesia, no sequel remaining. Eventually, a new piece may be reinserted.
5) Is there pain in the postoperative period?
Usually no. Even if there is some mild pain, it may be controlled with regular analgesics.
6) And what about dressings?
Usually a local dressing is necessary to keep the prosthesis firm in place. In addition, the dressing protects the are from possible trauma in the first days.
7) How long should i observe rest after surgery?
Depending on the type of activity you perform, only one day. In special cases, the patient may need some form of care for 8 to 10 days, however no strict rest regime is required.
8) What is the most important precaution before surgery?
You should inform the surgeon if you have any lower tooth infected or with inflammation. In this case, you should search for your dentist, before scheduling your mentoplasty surgery.
9) Will my face change markedly after the surgery?
No major phygsionomic changes should happen. However, your face will have a better balance, while keeping your particular features.
10) Can this surgery be associated with Rhinoplasty?
In many cases, the surgeon will even recommend that the two procedures be associated, in order to achieve a better aesthetic result for the face. This is called "profileplasty."
