OTOPLASTY (EAR SURGERY)
1) Does prominent ears surgery leave scars?
Every plastic surgery leaves scars. The scar from this surgery is not perceptible, since it is hidden behind the ear, in the crease formed between the ear and the skull. In addition, as the skin in this area is quite thin, the scar tends to become almost unapparent.
2) What is the type of anesthesia?
In children: general anesthesia.
In adults: local anesthesia with supervised sedation, or any other.
3) How long is the hospital stay?
In case of general anesthesia: 24 hours.
In case of local anesthesia: 8-12 hours.
4) How long is the surgical procedure?
Usually around 90 minutes (bilateral) or 45 minutes (unilateral).
5) Does this surgery bear any risk?
The risk is neither higher nor lower than that of a trip by plane or by car, or even that of simply crossing a street. The risks are those of everyday life, to which we are used.
6) Is there pain in the postoperative period?
Usually no. In case of intercurrent pain, it can be controlled with regular analgesics.
7) How is the dressing?
We keep the scar protected with small dressings. In the first days, particularly in kids, the ear should be protected with a cap, in order to avoid local trauma. In some cases, the ear is covered with a thin plaster, kept in place for 2 weeks.
8) When are the stitches removed? Is it painful?
Around the 15th day. The removal is not painful.
9) How long will does it take for the definitive result to be achieved?
As soon as the dressing is removed, 80% of the expected result will already have been reached, but there will still be swelling and bruising. After 6 months the definitive result is achieved, since this is the time required for the maturation of the scar.
10) Is there a risk of recurrence of the "Dumbo Ears" after surgery?
If appropriately conducted, the result of the surgery is definitive. It is worth mentioning that a slight asymmetry will remain, because even people who have never been submitted to surgery and those who have normal ears, do not have absolute symmetry.
