Filling or Bioplasty

With age, the skin becomes thinner, coarse, less turgid and elastic, and these aspects, associated with the action of the facial muscles and with gravity, lead to the development or wrinkles and lines on the skin.

Wrinkles and lines are depressions on the skin, the later being deeper. In an attempt to minimize them, several products have been developed to fill these depressions. In general, these products may be divided in two categories:

. Absorbable implants

. Non absorbable implants

Today, the most widely used product is PMMA, or polymethylmetacrylate. The filling of wrinkles and lines softens the skin traits, promoting a rejuvenated appearance.

The use of large amounts has become common, with the objective of increasing the volume of some areas or reshaping the body contours. Called bioplasty, the deep filling of the face, buttocks or other areas has been gaining wide acceptance. It is performed with the application of PMMA in deeper skin layers, where it is better tolerated than in superficial application.

The choice of material should be made together with the plastic surgeon, after an open discussion about the advantages of each method, and the most appropriate indication in each case.
